The five-year project aims to, among other things, demonstrate sector specific energy efficiency improvements and solar thermal technology application in the heating and cooling processes by the Malaysian industries.

The strategic initiatives of the project will support and contribute towards the reduction of anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions into the environment.

An initiative by the Government of Malaysia, the national project on “GHG Emissions Reductions in Targeted Industrial Sub-Sectors through Energy Efficiency and Application of Solar Thermal Systems in Malaysia,” is a joint effort by MOSTI, Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA), SME Corp, Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT), Solar Energy Research Centre-Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (SERI), Universiti Teknologi MARA and Centre for Education, Training and Research for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency of Universiti Sains Malaysia; in partnership with GEF and UNIDO.

Under the initiative, SIRIM has been appointed as the lead agency in the industrialisation of solar thermal technology in the country. The project was launched by Deputy Minister of MOSTI, Datuk Dr. Abu Bakar Mohamad Diah at SIRIM headquarters here, Thursday. Also present were Chief Industrial Energy Efficiency Unit of UNIDO, Marina Ploutakhina and President and Chief Executive of SIRIM Berhad, Dato’ Dr Zainal Abidin Mohd Yusof.

“This project will focus primarily on industrial thermal energy efficiency, optimisation of thermal processes and solar thermal systems application for heating and cooling processes,” Dato’ Dr. Abu Bakar said in his keynote address. He said the project seeks to address barriers in an integrated and holistic approach by combining demonstration projects with high replication potential, and ensures human capital development by providing capacity building trainings to the local technical force. “The project also aims to ensure the much needed policies, regulatory framework and incentive schemes are developed and put in place to facilitate the industrialisation of solar thermal systems and technology in the Malaysian industry,” he added. Dato’ Dr Abu Bakar said the solar thermal system and technology project will work with larger industries as well as SMEs. It will provide opportunities and educate the SMEs to manage energy cost and to be more competitive locally and internationally.

SIRIM Berhad President & Chief Executive Dato’ Dr Zainal Abidin Mohd Yusof said as the national Center of Excellence for industrial development, SIRIM is ready to focus its efforts to this new emerging solar thermal technology which is seen as an as up and coming viable and economical technology in the Malaysian industrial sector.

“We hope that the Government and also our local and international project partners will support us with much needed assistance in terms of research grants, technology transfer and capacity building to take this new initiatives to greater heights,” he said.

Dato’ Dr. Zainal Abidin also said that SIRIM’s experts will guide the SMEs on ways to reduce their energy consumption and manage their energy cost via EE improvements and the applications of solar thermal technology.
The launch of the national project also witnessed the presentation of Letter of Intent to Solar Energy Research Institute – Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (SERI-UKM); and Letter of Intent to Felda Agriculture & Services Sdn Bhd, Central Medicare Sdn Bhd, Pertubuhan Peladang Negeri Johor and Nooraini Cookies.

Experts from Renewable Energy field namely from SIRIM, UKM and private sectors such as Zamatel Sdn Bhd and Kingspan Environmental Ltd. also shared their findings and experiences through the papers presented during the half day program.
