SIRIM Offers Technology Expertise to Sabah Industry 

 


Kota Kinabalu, 3 May2016– The SIRIM-Industry Engagement programme, a joint effort by SIRIM, Ministry of Industrial Development (MID) and SME Corporation Malaysia held here today offers various technology applications and services in efforts to enhance the productivity of Sabah industries and entrepreneurs.

 

The half-day programme was opened by Deputy Chief Minister who is also Minister of MID Datuk Seri Panglima Raymond Tan Shu Kiah, gathered more than 100 representatives from government agencies, industry associations as well as local entrepreneurs from various sectors including retail, food & beverage, mining and plantation industries in Sabah.

 

Themed “Sustaining Your Business in a Challenging Market”, the SIRIM-Industry Engagement programme emphasised to participants the importance of Quality Management System, Packaging and Security Design Measurement and Calibration services as well as Quality Management System.

 

“We believe technology can be used to create growth and making the industry sectors more sustainable and profitable,” said Datuk Seri Panglima Raymond Tan Shu Kiah at the opening ceremony. Also present was Dato’ Dr Zainal Abidin Mohd Yusof, President and Group Chief Executive of SIRIM. 

 

The Deputy Chief Minister also urged entrepreneurs in Sabah to participate in the SIRIM-Fraunhofer programme which was designed specifically to increase productivity through technology application. He also stressed on the importance of branding and networking in growing businesses locally and internationally.

 

“Small and medium enterprises play an important role in driving the economic growth and contribute significantly to boost socio-economic development by providing jobs and generate more income,” he added.

 

Meanwhile, SIRIM’s President and Group Chief Executive Dato’ Dr. Zainal Abidin Mohd Yusof said SIRIM has been mandated by the government to increase technology penetration and upgrading their businesses and subsequently establish a successful SME innovation ecosytem.

“SIRIM is now a strong group with six subsidiaries. Our activities are now streamlined to better support initiatives to increase innovation, R&D and commercialisation among the SMEs. 

“Under a five-year transformation programme which took into effect in 2013 and a recent restructuring exercise, SIRIM now consists of SIRIM Industrial Research and new subsidiaries namely SIRIM Standards Technology Sdn Bhd, SIRIM Measurements Technology Sdn Bhd and SIRIM Tech Venture Sdn Bhd,” he said.

Dato’ Dr. Zainal Abidin said SIRIM had also strengthened its subsidiaries such as SIRIM QAS International Sdn Bhd, SIRIM STS Sdn Bhd and National Precision Tooling Sdn Bhd to provide better solutions that are relevant to the current marketplace.

“SIRIM’s presence in Sabah for the past 30 years inR&D, quality, trainings and other areas has benefitted the community in Sabah.  Technology application introduced among others are ceramics handicraft, cosmetics, detergent, parang industry in Kota Belud and ‘tukun’ or artificial reef in Sandakan waters,” he added.

 

He said, from 2011-2014, more than 80 micro enterprises in Sabah received assistance to improve their product packaging, branding and testing,  through Program Transformasi Usahawan Sabah (TRUS), a collaborative program between SIRIM and MID.

 

SIRIM is currently collaborating with the Department of Fisheries of Sabah to enhance the marine industry via technology to elevate productivity and economic well-being of local fishermen. SIRIM is also setting up a demo plant to produce bio-natural gas from palm oil mill effluent in Tawau.

 

“In addition to these, SIRIM offers GroomBig Programme which entails packaging, technology and process enhancement, web design, quality training and entrepreneur development programme,” he added.

 

Apart from networking session provided to help and guide SMEs for better product and services development, participants of the SIRIM-Industry Engagement programme were also introduced to SIRIM Industrial Innovation Model and the Technology Audit programme; a collaboration between SIRIM and Fraunhofer Germany, with the support of the Malaysian government that will help SMEs to be more competitive, innovative and productive to make their products more accessible to the market andinternationally accepted.  

 

The Technology Audit looks at six major components such as productivity, trends in processes and method, technology management, employees, organisation/networking and technology strategy.

SIRIM TAWAR KEPAKARAN TEKNOLOGI KEPADA INDUSTRI DI SABAH

 

Kota Kinabalu, 3 Mei 2016- Program ‘SIRIM-Industry Engagement’ satu usahasama oleh SIRIM, Kementerian Pembangunan Perindustrian (MID) dan SME Corporation Malaysia yang diadakan di sini hari ini menawarkan pelbagai aplikasi dan perkhidmatan teknologi dalam usaha meningkatkan produktiviti industri dan usahawan di Sabah.

 

Program setengah hari ini telah dirasmikan oleh Timbalan Ketua Menteri Sabah yang juga Menteri MID Datuk Seri Panglima Raymond Tan Shu Kiah, menghimpunkan lebih 100 wakil dari agensi kerajaan, persatuan industri dan usahawan tempatan dari pelbagai sektor di Sabah termasuk industri peruncitan, makanan dan minuman, perlombongan dan perladangan di Sabah.

 

Bertemakan "Mengekalkan Perniagaan Anda dalam Pasaran Mencabar", program ‘SIRIM-Industry Engagement’ antaranya, menekankan kepada kepentingan Sistem Pengurusan Kualiti, Pembungkusan dan Rekabentuk Keselamatan, Pengukuran, dan Perkhidmatan Tentukuran serta Sistem Pengurusan Kualiti.

 

"Kami percaya teknologi boleh digunakan untuk mewujudkan pertumbuhan dan menjadikan sektor industri lebih mampan dan menguntungkan," kata Datuk Seri Panglima Raymond Tan Shu Kiah ketika merasmikan program itu. Turut hadir ialah Dato' Dr Zainal Abidin Mohd Yusof, Presiden dan Ketua Eksekutif Kumpulan SIRIM.

 

Timbalan Ketua Menteri juga menggesa usahawan di Sabah untuk mengambil bahagian dalam program SIRIM-Fraunhofer yang telah dibangunkan khusus untuk meningkatkan produktiviti Perusahaan Kecil dan Sederhana (PKS) melalui aplikasi teknologi. Beliau juga menegaskan tentang kepentingan penjenamaan dan jaringan dalam mengembangkan perniagaan dalam dan luar negara.

 

"PKS memainkan peranan penting dalam memacu pertumbuhan ekonomi dan menyumbang dengan ketara kepada peningkatan pembangunan sosio-ekonomi dengan menyediakan peluang pekerjaan dan menjana pendapatan yang lebih," katanya.  

 

Sementara itu, Presiden dan Ketua Eksekutif Kumpulan SIRIM Dato’ Dr. Zainal Abidin Mohd Yusof berkata SIRIM telah diberi mandat oleh kerajaan untuk meningkatkan penggunaan teknologi dan menaik taraf perniagaan mereka dan seterusnya mewujudkan inovasi ekosistem yang baik.

"SIRIM kini adalah organisasi yang mempunyai enam buah anak syarikat yang kukuh.    Aktiviti kami diselaraskan kepada inisiatif sokongan yang lebih baik untuk meningkatkan inovasi, R&D dan pengkomersilan di kalangan PKS.”

"Di bawah program transformasi lima tahun yang bermula padaa tahun 2013 dan penstrukturan semula baru-baru ini, SIRIM kini terdiri daripada SIRIM Industrial Research dan anak-anak syarikat baru seperti SIRIM Standards Technology Sdn Bhd, SIRIM Measurements Technology Sdn Bhd dan SIRIM Tech Venture Sdn Bhd," katanya.

Dato' Dr. Zainal Abidin berkata SIRIM juga telah mengukuhkan anak-anak syarikat lain seperti SIRIM QAS International Sdn Bhd, SIRIM STS Sdn Bhd dan National Precision Tooling Sdn Bhd untuk menyediakan penyelesaian yang lebih baik yang bersesuaian dengan  pasaran semasa.

"Kehadiran SIRIM di Sabah sejak 30 tahun yang lalu dalam R&D, kualiti, latihan dan lain-lain bidang telah memberikan manfaat kepada masyarakat di Sabah. Aplikasi teknologi yang diperkenalkan antara lain adalah bagi kraftangan seramik, kosmetik, bahan pencuci, industri parang di Kota Belud dan tukun atau karang buatan di perairan Sandakan," katanya

 

Beliau berkata, dari tahun 2011-2014, lebih daripada 80 perusahaan mikro di Sabah telah menerima bantuan untuk meningkatkan taraf pembungkusan produk, penjenamaan dan ujian, melalui Program Transformasi Usahawan Sabah (TRUS), sebuah program kerjasama antara SIRIM dan MID.

 

Terbaru, SIRIM sedang bekerjasama dengan Jabatan Perikanan Sabah untuk meningkatkan industri marin melalui teknologi bagi meningkatkan produktiviti dan kesejahteraan ekonomi nelayan tempatan. SIRIM juga telah mendirikan loji demo bagi penghasilan biogas asli dari sisa kilang minyak kelapa sawit di Tawau.

 

"Selain itu, SIRIM turut menawarkan Program Groom Big yang melibatkan pembungkusan, teknologi dan peningkatan proses, reka bentuk web, latihan kualiti dan program pembangunan usahawan," katanya.

 

Selain daripada sesi rangkaian kerjasama yang disediakan untuk membantu dan membimbing PKS untuk produk yang lebih baik serta pembangunan perkhidmatan rangkaian, peserta program ‘SIRIM-Industry Engagement’ juga diperkenalkan kepada Model Inovasi Industri SIRIM dan program Audit Teknologi; kerjasama antara SIRIM dan Fraunhofer German, dengan sokongan kerajaan Malaysia yang akan membantu PKS menjadi lebih berdaya saing, inovatif dan produktif bagi membolehkan produk mereka lebih mudah didapati dan diterima di pasaran antarabangsa.

 

Audit Teknologi menjurus kepada enam komponen utama seperti produktiviti, trend dalam proses dan kaedah, teknologi pengurusan, pekerja, organisasi/ rangkaian dan strategi teknologi.
