OPPORTUNITY TO BECOME PART OF A GLOBAL INNOVATION FAMILY

SHAH ALAM, JULY 13, 2016 – SIRIM, a leading organisation for industrial research and technology innovation in Malaysia and also the host for the World Association of Industrial and Technological Research Organizations (WAITRO) Secretariat, organised a networking session to promote the benefits of becoming a member of WAITRO today.

The networking session entitled “WAITRO, Your Window to the World” is a platform for organisations and industries in Malaysia to gain exposure to the WAITRO network. Becoming a member of WAITRO provides access to a huge pool of technical expertise from about 160 WAITRO members in over 70 developed and developing nations from around the globe. This means that a member is also able to benefit from their WAITRO membership by selling their technology and expertise to others in the network.

President and Group Chief Executive of SIRIM, Dato’ Dr. Zainal Abidin Mohd Yusof  said SIRIM and WAITRO had organised programmes that involves  technical experts such as workshops, forums, research fellowships and the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme.  

“SIRIM and WAITRO have successfully delivered a poverty alleviation project, entitled ‘Enhancing Capability of Hydro-Generator and Extending Power Supply to Larger Areas to Support Post Harvest Processing Activities of Local Herbs in East Malaysia,” he said.

Speaking at the opening of the networking session here today, Zainal Abidin said SIRIM is also part of a consortium that bid for the European Union (EU) project entitled ‘Photocatalytic Materials for De-pollution’ and was a partner in the project entitled ‘Phane Caterpillar of Southern Africa: A Novel Alternative Protein Source for Human Foods’.

“We have been partnering with WAITRO in several major projects, among other things, we participated together in an EU project bidding on Processing of Biowaste for Sustainable Products in Developing Countries where WAITRO, SIRIM and several international research organisations formed a consortium to successfully bid for the 2.9 million Euro project,” he said.

The networking programme was organised to promote knowledge-sharing and experience in the area of science and technology as well as to provide perspective on model of collaboration and possible future collaborative projects. It is an opportunity for organisations and industries to learn of the benefits of being a member of WAITRO, whose Secretariat is based in Malaysia (SIRIM).

About 70 representatives from government agencies, universities and local industries attended the networking session. Among the attendees are those from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM), Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), Petronas and Astronautic Technology (M) Sdn Bhd.

Also present were Vice President of SIRIM Industrial Research, Dr. Mohamad Jamil Sulaiman, First Vice-President of WAITRO, Dr. Eckart Bierdümpel and  Secretary-General of WAITRO, Dr. Rohani Hashim.

 

WAITRO is a non-governmental, not-for-profit association, established in 1970 under the  United Nations with the aims to be the leading global network of research and technological organisations through collaboration of knowledge-sharing for sustainable development. Throughout the years, WAITRO has encouraged technical co-operation amongst members while promoting capability building in developing countries. WAITRO has also partnered with ISESCO, UNIDO and UNESCO in various initiatives.
