TECHNOLOGY AND MARKET RADAR TO ASSIST SMEs
IN INCREASING TECHNOLOGY PENETRATION

SHAH ALAM, 18 MAY 2017: Technology and Market Radar (TMR), a business tool to assist local SMEs to identify relevant technology and market trends for making strategic decisions on technology investment has been launched today.

TMR is designed to be accessed by SMEs, Ministries and Government Agencies to retrieve relevant and strategic information on technology and business trends complemented with an analysis of opportunities and challenges.

The TMR was launched by President and Group Chief Executive of SIRIM, Prof Ir. Dr. Ahmad Fadzil Mohamad Hani here. More than 100 participants attended the event which consists of local SMEs, industries and government officials related to the Malaysian SME activities.

Based on Technology Audits conducted on more than 300 SMEs in 2015 and 2016 by SIRIM under the SIRIM Fraunhofer Programme, lack of data on market and technology trend has been identified as one of the weaknesses affecting SMEs business growth.  To address this weakness, SIRIM and Fraunhofer IAO has collaborated to establish Technology and Market Radar (TMR) suitable for Malaysian SMEs.

Prof Ir. Dr. Ahmad Fadzil in his speech said the initial implementation stage of TMR has two main focus search topics namely Industry 4.0 and Renewable Energy as both technology fields are categorised as high interest fields among SMEs to boost productivity growth.

There will be one radar for the non-technical trend which is based on the Social, Economic, Environment and Politics methodology.

“More search topics will be further developed and enhanced in the future through TMR programme to cover the wide spectrum of technologies according to the market trends and business needs essentially.

“TMR will be a substantial tool in which its platform is designed from combination of technology management standpoint and IT perspectives, capable to manoeuver and channel data on technology and market; and transform it into potential new products and business models for future markets,” he said.

Major benefits of TMR for Malaysian SMEs
  • Awareness of upcoming technologies, potential substitutes and alternatives for existing ones as well as related market trends
  • Support in decision-making and timing for investment strategies regarding new technologies
  • Support for business expansion (new products, additional local and export markets)
  • Extended information basis (market and technologies) for creating product and technology roadmaps
  • Link between technology and market trends, related information sources, experts and institutions with technical knowledge
  • Comprehensive access to technology and market trend information
  • Platform to enhance knowledge exchange between technology experts from research and industry
SIRIM - Fraunhofer Programme was launched in Dec 2014 following the mandate from the Malaysian Government to spur growth of SME through technology penetration and upgrading. Fraunhofer IAO in Germany is Europe’s largest application-oriented research organisation; the partnership reinforced SIRIM’s strengths to meet new demands on industrial research and technology development to carry out the government mandate successfully.

Various programmes were established through SIRIM Fraunhofer programme to fulfil the mandate given such as -- implementation of innovation management through implementation of technology audit and value chain analysis; development of SIRIM standard on innovation management; TMR and implementation of industrial extension on innovation management.

Other programmes include increase of technology uptake cluster; nurture growth of SMEs cluster and cross-cutting programmes cluster that include local and international linkages.

SMEs are encouraged to access the TMR radar to explore the information provided and can provide their comments and feedback for the radar future improvement.

RADAR TEKNOLOGI DAN PASARAN BANTU PKS TINGKAT PENEMBUSAN
TEKNOLOGI
