This revised Malaysian Standard was prepared with a view to supersede the earlier version of MS 124, published in 1973. Changes featured in the revised standard include the following:
(a) solubility of bitumen is carried out in trichloroethylene instead of carbon disulphide.
(b) inclusion of thin film oven test and loss on heating as requirement.
(c) insertion of a clause on handling and packaging.
(d) to substitute `specific gravity' with `relative density'.

This Malaysian Standard covers the various grades of cut-back bitumen of the medium-curing (MC) type for use in the construction and/or maintenance of pavements.
This standard was based mainly on ASTM 2027-76 (1992) Vol (04.03), 'Specification for cutback asphalt (medium-curing type)' with modifications to suit local conditions.
This standard shall supersede MS 159 : 1973.
The following changes were noted in the revised standard :
(1) to include the date of manufacture;
(2) the standard only specifies the various grades of medium-curing type of bitumen, omitting the rapid-curing and slowing-curing type of bitumen.

Specification for bitumen-based coatings for cold application for use in contact with potable water (First revision).
This Malaysian Standard introduces technical changes that had been incorporated through the course of revising the standard.
The main changes featured are :
(i) The introduction of bitumen-based coatings, type 2, with fillers. Both type 1 and type 2 are further sub- divided into three classes.
(ii) Guidance on the use of bitumen-based coatings is also given.
(iii) The inclusion of bend resistance test and
(iv) Shelf-life requirements.
This standard shall supersede MS 160 : 1973.

MS 161: 1994
Specification for cationic bitumen emulsions for use in pavement applications (First revision).
This Malaysian Standard was first published in 1973 as MS 161 'Specification for bitumen emulsions for use in pavement applications'. The main changes featured in this first revision are:
(1) Requirements for anionic emulsions are excluded as this type of emulsions are not used in pavement applications;
(2) SS 1 Kh grade of cationic emulsion is also excluded as it is also not used in Malaysia to reflect local practice;
(3) One extra grade of rapid-setting cationic bitumen emulsion, RS-OK is being included;
(4) 'Storage stability test' replaced 'settlement test' to be in line with ASTM D2397-86.
In this revision, references were made to:
(1) BS 434 : Part 1 : 1984 'Specification for bitumen road emulsions'.
(2) ASTM D2397-85 'Specification for cationic emulsified asphalt'.
This standard supersedes MS 161 : 1973 'Specification for bitumen emulsions for use in pavement applications'.

This Malaysian Standard is the first revision of MS 378 : 1976. This standard covers materials for mastic asphalt suitable for use in water-proofing the floors of buildings and bridges, for reservoirs, waterways, subways and similar structures. In the revised version, bitumen is defined as soluble in trichloroethylene instead of carbon disulphide, the former being a safer solvent to use. Where available, test methods shall be quoted against MS instead of ASTM.

(1) To classify the three grades into light fuel oil, medium fuel oil and heavy fuel oil respectively.
