Bioprocess Technology is a sub-discipline within Biotechnology that utilises biological process, typically employs living cells or enzymes, under a specific optimal nutrient and environment to produce commercially useful metabolites such as enzymes and proteins, platform chemicals and lipids.
The high demand of products covering various industries such as environment, healthcare, agriculture, food, cosmetics and others are the driving force behind the Bioprocess Technology Section’s plethora of innovations. Performing as the backbone of Biotechnology, we are responsible for translating laboratory research to industrial application via genetic modification of microorganism, optimisation of fermentation process, product realisation and commercialisation.
Industrialisation of the biological process goes through its bottleneck pilot scale process. IBRC’s Pilot Plant is well equipped with bioreactors of various capacities, supported by upstream and downstream processing equipment.
Supporting the Biotechnology industrialisation goal is our repertoire of multi-disciplinary researchers encompassing those of the following specialization:
A global area of concern is the environmental degradation and resources sustainability because of waste products such as conventional plastics and biomass. Therefore, we have developed technology in collaboration with local universities and research institutions to offer solutions to alleviate the problems. Together with local universities, we have developed a process of producing PHA bioplastic which may be an alternative to conventional petroleum-based plastics. Other bioplastic in which IBRC are focussing on are from plant or marine-based polymers (biopolymers). One such biopolymer is Chitin from marine sources and IBRC has succeeded in developing a process for the conversion of Chitin into a biomedical wound management product.
