SIRIM TO PROVIDE EXPERTISE IN BIO NATURAL GAS PRODUCTION
SIRIM Tech Venture Signs MoU with BION Sdn Bhd

SHAH ALAM, 19 November 2020:  SIRIM Tech Ventures Sdn. Bhd. (STV), a wholly owned commercialisation arm of SIRIM Berhad, today inks an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BiON, an established environmental engineering and renewable energy solutions provider.

The MoU aims to promote co-operation between the two companies in the distribution of energy gas through Virtual Pipeline System (VPS); the establishment of bio-energy hub in monetising agriculture and industrial waste; and pilot test for production of Bio Natural Gas (BioNG) from existing biogas power plants.

Both STV and BION will also establish technical cooperation in the production of compressed biogas and related systems; and other potential projects related to Waste-to-Energy.

The MoU that marked SIRIM's successful effort in advancing bioenergy technologies into the marketplace, was signed in an online ceremony today. It was initiated by Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) through its Domestic Investment Coordination Platform by matching and facilitating technology providers with industry partners in the bio-energy value chain to explore opportunities and challenges as well as to chart the way forward for the industry.

STV was represented by SIRIM President & Group Chief Executive, Datuk Ir. Dr. Ahmad Fadzil Mohamad Hani while BION by its Chief Executive Officer/ Executive Director, Datuk Syed Nazim Syed Faisal.

Datuk Ir Dr Ahmad Fadzil in his remarks during the signing ceremony said, in supporting the biogas industry, SIRIM develops innovative solutions for the production of biogas and to upgrade its quality to natural gas-like fuel or Bio Natural Gas (BioNG).

“SIRIM has expertise across the entire value chain such as purification and production, distribution via the Virtual Pipeline System (VPS), utilisation and standard development as well as testing and verification," he said.

SIRIM has successfully developed and demonstrated the technical and economic viability of Bio Natural Gas (BioNG) for market access through a demonstration plant. The idea took physical form in the year 2016 when the demonstration plant for BioNG was established in Merotai, Tawau. The plant was capable of producing 6,000m cube of bio natural gas or equivalent to approximately 6,000 liters of diesel fuel per day.

The demonstration was done at both on and off sites, focusing on the holistic value chain which involved raw material, production, processing, storage and distribution.

“Through our own filament winding technology, we are able to produce pressure vessels, tanks, pipes and other round form products for the distribution of compressed biogas or even for hydrogen," Datuk Ir Dr Ahmad Fadzil added.

At present, biogas energy has the potential to generate 736 MW of energy derived from palm oil mill effluent, manure and landfill resources in the country. It is estimated that the utilisation of energy from biogas is about 25 percent of this amount.

“Through SIRIM's BioNG solution, we anticipate to contribute significantly in the exploitation of the relevant technologies, in order to convert the abundant biomass into renewable energy products.

“According to the Malaysia Energy Statistics 2019, biogas contributes to only 0.1 percent or 41 ktoe (kilo ton oil equivalent) as energy input to power plant. Definitely, there's more to explore here," Datuk Ir Dr Ahmad Fadzil said.

STV, based in Shah Alam, accelerates business commercialisation of SIRIM's research and innovation into the marketplace.

BiON, an established environmental engineering and renewable energy solutions provider, has securely built its foundations, expertise and knowledge with a successful project track record in delivery of wastewater treatment solutions and services for various industries throughout Asia.

SIRIM SEDIAKAN KEPAKARAN DALAM PENGELUARAN BIOGAS ASLI

SIRIM Tech Venture tandatangan MoU dengan BION Sdn Bhd

SHAH ALAM, 19 Nov: SIRIM Tech Venture Sdn. Bhd.
