The innovation centre was established to build technological capabilities of industries seeking new innovations in medical device products to meet the current and future market needs as well as building market access capabilities of the medical device industry and develop Communities of Practice in managing and commercialising new technologies.
MDIC, located at Kulim Hi-Tech Park, Kedah enables collaboration with various smart partners that include medical device manufacturers, government ministries and agencies, international manufacturing innovation centres, research institutes and universities.
The launch of MDIC was officiated by Senior Minister, Minister of International Trade and Industry, Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali. SIRIM’s Chairman, Academician Tan Sri Ir. Dr. Ahmad Tajuddin Ali, and SIRIM’s President and Group Chief Executive, Dato’ Dr Ahmad Sabirin Arshad were also present at the event.
Senior Minister, Minister of International Trade and Industry, Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said SIRIM, an agency under MITI that leads industrial technology has taken a bold step with the establishment of MDIC in line with the country's healthcare and medical sector which is expected to grow at 5.7% from 2020 to 2025 following an increase in the population of the elderly and non-infectious diseases.
"At the beginning of the pandemic, the government faced a shortage of PPE supplies, diagnostic kits and even high-capacity testing laboratories. From this experience, we have learned that Malaysia is a significant trading economy in the global supply chain.
"Strategic policies have been reviewed to strengthen the industry, especially in the medical device industry," he said.
SIRIM’s President and Group Chief Executive, Dato’ Dr Ahmad Sabirin Arshad said SIRIM plays a role as part of the enabler in strengthening the country’s medical device ecosystem, through capacity building such as research and development of medical device products; measurement and calibration for the medical device industry; conformity assessment i.e. testing, inspection and certification; technical training assistance to develop medical device industry standards; and improving productivity through the SIRIM Fraunhofer Program.
Three major programs will be implemented by MDIC involving advanced technological innovations for local SMEs; Industry 4.0 technologies adopted by large local companies and major vendor projects to be joined by multinational companies and local SMEs.
MDIC will also implement manufacturing innovation incubator, open laboratory and "teaching factory" which will enable a network of public and private collaboration to be realised.
MDIC was established following feedbacks obtained by SIRIM from the medical device industry and related government agencies which among others raised issues and challenges faced by the industry such as: technological innovation, market access, human resource development and policies to assist the industry.
The main challenges posed by all levels of the industry are limited resources in conducting product R&D due to lack of financial resources, infrastructure facilities and highly skilled workers. Meanwhile, multinational companies are facing difficulties in securing human resources with specific expertise to achieve their technological direction.
