SIRIM’S BIO-NATURAL GAS FROM PALM OIL MILL EFFLUENT WINS ASEAN ENERGY AWARDS 2019

SHAH ALAM, 5 SEP 2019: SIRIM, a leading research and technology agency under the Ministry of International Trade and Industry has been named the winner of the ASEAN Energy Awards 2019 in the category of Special Submission for its project, ‘Compressed Bio–Natural Gas for Green Mobility and Power Generation in Oil Palm Industry’.

The award was presented to SIRIM President and Group Chief Executive, Prof. Ir. Dr. Ahmad Fadzil Mohamad Hani in conjunction with the 37th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting and Associated Meetings in Bangkok on Wednesday. Also present at the award presentation ceremony was Vice President of SIRIM Industrial Research, Dr Ir. Mohamad Jamil Sulaiman and project leader, Azhar Abdul Raof.

‘SIRIM Berhad has stood out as a leader who exemplifies the achievements across Special Submission and is bringing the region closer to a greener community’, according to the official letter from ASEAN Energy Business Forum on SIRIM’s win.

The ‘Compressed Bio–Natural Gas for Green Mobility and Power Generation in Oil Palm Industry’ project harnesses energy from unutilised biogas with the aim of producing alternative fuel that complies with automotive standards and promote greenhouse gas reduction activities. It also demonstrates the viability of Bio-Natural Gas (BioNG) production at semi commercial scale; and to strengthen the commercialisation of BioNG as alternative fuel to diesel-fired power plant and industrial users. 

BioNG is a natural gas produced from bio waste such as oil palm waste, food waste or industrial waste. This is a second-generation biofuel and has the smallest carbon footprint among various energy sources.  The use of biogas as vehicle fuel and for diesel fuel displacement for stationary engine is new in Malaysia; this is part of SIRIM’s initiative to support green mobility within plantation communities and oil palm industry.

SIRIM’s BioNG project involved design, build, commission and operate a commercialready plant in Merotai, Tawau, Sabah to produce compressed biogas generated from palm oil mill effluent (POME). The plant can produce 6,000m3 of BioNG or approximately 6,000 litres of diesel per day. The testing and commissioning of the plant was completed in November 2017.

BioNG produced by SIRIM for use on-site and off-site, can improve the sustainability of palm oil and environment production. Other interesting features of SIRIM BioNG, include reducing the amount of greenhouse gases emission, as well as reducing the use of petroleum-based gas in the energy and transport sectors. Unlike petroleum gas, BioNG is one of the greenest hydrocarbon fuels in the market and has the lowest carbon footprint. 

The project was co-funded by SIRIM and MOSTI (now Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change, MESTECC) under Dana Sains Teknologi Inovasi Nasional.

​BIOGAS ASLI SIRIM DARIPADA EFLUEN KILANG MINYAK SAWIT MEMENANGI ANUGERAH TENAGA ASEAN 2019

​SHAH ALAM, 5 SEPT 2019: SIRIM, sebuah agensi penyelidikan dan teknologi utama di bawah Kementerian Perdagangan Antarabangsa dan Industri, telah dinamakan pemenang Anugerah Tenaga ASEAN 2019 dalam kategori Penyertaan Khas untuk projeknya, 'Biogas Asli Termampat untuk Mobiliti Hijau dan Penjanaan Kuasa dalam Industri Minyak Sawit '.
Anugerah itu disampaikan kepada Presiden SIRIM dan Ketua Eksekutif Kumpulan, Prof. Ir. Dr. Ahmad Fadzil Mohamad Hani bersempena dengan the 37th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting and Associated Meetings di Bangkok pada hari Rabu. Turut hadir pada majlis penyampaian anugerah itu ialah Naib Presiden Penyelidikan Perindustrian SIRIM, Dr. Ir. Mohamad Jamil Sulaiman dan ketua projek, Azhar Abdul Raof.
'SIRIM Berhad menonjol sebagai peneraju yang memberikan contoh pencapaian dalam Penyerahan Khas dan membawakan komuniti yang lebih hijau ke wilayah itu,' menurut surat rasmi Forum ASEAN Energy Business mengenai kemenangan SIRIM.
Projek ‘Biogas Asli Termampat untuk Mobiliti Hijau dan Penjanaan Kuasa dalam Industri Minyak Sawit' memanfaatkan tenaga daripada biogas yang tidak digunakan dengan tujuan menghasilkan bahan api alternatif yang mematuhi piawaian automotif dan mempromosikan aktiviti pengurangan gas rumah hijau. Ia juga menunjukkan daya maju pengeluaran Biogas Asli (BioNG) pada skala semi komersial; dan mengukuhkan pengkomersilan BioNG sebagai bahan api alternatif kepada loji kuasa diesel dan pengguna industri.
BioNG adalah gas asli yang dihasilkan daripada sisa bio seperti sisa kelapa sawit, sisa makanan atau sisa industri. Ini adalah bahan api bio generasi kedua dan mempunyai jejak karbon terendah di antara pelbagai sumber tenaga. Penggunaan biogas sebagai bahan api kenderaan dan penggantian bahan api diesel untuk enjin pegun adalah perkara baru di Malaysia; ini adalah sebahagian daripada inisiatif SIRIM untuk menyokong mobiliti hijau dalam komuniti perladangan dan industri kelapa sawit.
Projek BioNG SIRIM melibatkan reka bentuk, membina, membuat dan mengendalikan loji siap komersial di Merotai, Tawau, Sabah untuk menghasilkan biogas termampat yang dihasilkan daripada efluen kilang minyak sawit (POME). Loji itu boleh menghasilkan 6,000m3 BioNG atau kira-kira 6,000 liter diesel setiap hari. Pengujian dan pentauliahan loji itu telah siap pada November 2017.
BioNG yang dihasilkan oleh SIRIM untuk digunakan di dalam dan di luar tapak, boleh meningkatkan kelestarian pengeluaran minyak sawit dan alam sekitar. Ciri-ciri menarik BioNG SIRIM termasuk mengurangkan jumlah pelepasan gas rumah hijau, serta mengurangkan penggunaan gas berasaskan petroleum dalam sektor tenaga dan pengangkutan. Tidak seperti gas petroleum, BioNG adalah salah satu bahan api hidrokarbon paling hijau di pasaran dan mempunyai jejak karbon terendah.
Projek ini dibiayai bersama oleh SIRIM dan MOSTI (kini Kementerian Tenaga, Sains, Teknologi, Alam Sekitar dan Perubahan Iklim, MESTECC) di bawah Dana Sains Teknologi Inovasi Nasional.
Anugerah Tenaga ASEAN menggambarkan tanda aras kecemerlangan dan memberi pengiktirafan kepada mereka yang bekerja dalam industri tersebut. Anugerah Tenaga ASEAN meraikan mereka yang melampaui sempadan, memaparkan kepimpinan contoh dan memacu inovasi. Para pemenang dan perniagaan mereka telah memainkan peranan penting dalam pembangunan sektor ini dan membantu memacu industri ke hadapan ke arah masa depan yang lebih mapan.
