Eco-Materials for Marine Ecosystem Towards Sustainable Bio-Economy

In SIRIM, we develop eco-friendly materials to be used for rehabilitation and restoration of marine ecosystem in order to build up sustainable socio-economic resources for the community in the form of:

Artificial Reef /Tukun Inovasi

Artificial Coral Substrate

Geotextile Submerged Wave Breaker

Floating Fish Aggregating Device (FFAD)

ECO-MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY

Sustainable Building Materials

In SIRIM, we develop sustainable building materials with sensible use of natural resources which can be achieved by the use of by-products and reusable materials, resulting a lower environmental impacts with reduced carbon dioxide emission and natural resources extraction in the form of:

Sustainable Concrete from Industrial Fly Ash and Industrial Waste

Lightweight, Eco-Friendly Fired Bricks and Wall Panel using Natural Fibre from Waste Materials

ECO-MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY

Resource Efficiency of Waste Materials for Sustainable Industrial Application

Under resource efficiency of waste, three categories of waste will be focused on for re-use to obtain by-products or end of waste products they are:

Industrial Non-Hazardous Solid Waste produced by industrial activity which includes any material that is rendered useless during a manufacturing process such as that of factories, industries, mills and mining.

Waste by Products such as Fly Ash from agriculture processing and power generation plants.

Waste by Products from Water Treatment Plant.

Natural Fibres from Agro-based Industries

ECO-MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY

Biodegradable Materials

Biodegradable materials are capable of undergoing biological decomposition in a compost site such that the material is not visually distinguishable and breaks down into carbon dioxide, water, inorganic compounds and biomass at a rate consistent with known compostable materials. Applications of these materials are mainly as packaging materials.

Natural Fiber

Utilization of natural fibre, especially agricultural waste fibre needs further development as a long term strategy to develop the tremendous wealth of natural plant fibre that are currently underutilised. Agriculture waste can be obtained from plant such as oil palm, bagasse, corn stalks, coir, bamboo, pineapple, banana as well as rice husk which can be extracted from various parts of the plants (stem, leaf, seed, fruit, stalk and grass/reed).

Bio-polymer Composite

Polymers obtained by microbial production, e.g., poly (hydroxyalkanoates) (PHAs) such as poly(hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and poly(hydroxybutyrate co-hydroxyvalerate (PHBV); Polymers chemically synthesized using monomers obtained from agro-resources, e.g., poly(lactic acid) (PLA);
