SIRIM AND PAKAR TENAGA BERSATU INK MOU TO ENHANCE RESEARCH, INNOVATION AND INDUSTRY COLLABORATION

KUCHING, 23 September 2024: SIRIM Berhad, together with SIRIM Academy and SIRIM QAS International organised a seminar titled 'ISO 29001: Elevating Your Quality Management in Oil & Gas – Competitive Advantage', at Imperial Hotel, today, marking an important milestone in the nation’s efforts to enhance safety, reliability, and efficiency within the petroleum, petrochemical, and natural gas sectors.

The seminar aims to offer valuable insights into how the ISO 29001 certification is crucial for industry players to maintain high standards, reduce operational risks, and drive continuous improvement, fostering sustainable growth and innovation in the oil, gas, and petrochemical sectors.

The seminar event was officiated by the Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak, Dato' Sri Haji Julaihi Haji Narawi and Puan Hajah Nur Fadhilah Muhammad, CEO of SIRIM QAS International Sdn. Bhd.

Speaking at the event, Dato' Sri Haji Julaihi said that the ministry is taking a proactive stance to ensure that all gas players operating in Sarawak adhere to the highest standards of quality and reliability. As part of the upcoming license renewal process in 2026, the ministry will require all gas players to attach their ISO 29001 certificate as a mandatory document.

“This measure underscores the government's commitment to promoting excellence, safety, and sustainability within the oil and gas sector, as well as serve as a clear signal that adherence to international standards is non-negotiable for all industry participants. I urge all gas players in Sarawak to proactively pursue ISO 29001 certification as part of their commitment to operational excellence and industry best practices." Dato' Sri Haji Julaihi added.

Meanwhile, Puan Nur Fadhilah said ISO 29001:2020 also provides businesses with a strong framework to ensure high-quality operations that meet regulatory requirements while building customer trust. It promotes continuous improvement, helping companies adapt to industry demands. By implementing ISO 29001, businesses enhance operational efficiency and gain a competitive edge, positioning them to exceed industry expectations and global standards.

“In addition to ISO 29001, we are also promoting two vital certifications. Firstly, the SIRIM 55 ESG Management System Certification enables companies to showcase their commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, positioning them as responsible and sustainable market leaders. Secondly, the IECEx certification, which is essential for industries operating in hazardous environments, ensures safety and compliance in potentially explosive atmospheres." Puan Hajah Nur Fadhilah Binti Muhammad, CEO of SIRIM QAS International Sdn. Bhd said in her opening remarks.

Also present during the seminar launching was Datuk Dr. Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication II (Utility), Datuk Dr. Hazland Abang Hipni, Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability and Ts. Shahrizan Mohammad Sahmoni, Regional Director SIRIM Sarawak.
