Cosmetics and Natural Products Section acts as a one-stop centre where innovations in several technologies are integrated to develop effective and high value consumer products in the form of skincare and over-the-counter (OTC) product formulations. Novel innovations are introduced in extraction technology, bioactive claims investigation (bioassays) and efficacy delivery technologies to ensure products convey a unique customer experience. The technical expertise and facilities are well equipped to meet customer satisfaction and legal requirements including ASEAN Cosmetics Directive, National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA), Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and HALAL requirements.

IBRC has a long, proud history of helping businesses successfully harness Malaysia's rich natural biodiversity. Our experienced researchers with multidisciplinary expertise join force together assisting the entrepreneurs to develop products that are both chemically and biologically safe yet effective for consumers. Our specialisations of Cosmetics and Natural Product Sections are:

Extraction of plants through solvent, aqueous and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE)
Purification and isolation of bioactive metabolites from plants extracts
Standardisation, profiling and identification of bioactive based on Herbal Monograph from Ministry of Agriculture (MOA)

From Nature to Consumers

Great product potency, visible therapeutics effect and high skin permeability are the principle features in developing effective cosmetic products. Based on this, our focus in natural product innovation are green extraction and isolation of plants bioactive, assessment of bioactive activity through in vitro and in vivo, formulating for product realisation and finally verification of product's efficacy before market commercialisation. Among the products that have been successfully developed from local herbal which hit the market are:

Skin lightening cosmeceutical product developed from Zingiber family extract – Xanzwhite and PNLC (licensed to SirehMas).

Skincare product from seaweed sourced from crystal-clear waters of Semporna in Eastern Sabah. The seaweed-based serum has skin lightening, anti-oxidant, anti-wrinkle, UV protection and skin moisturizing properties. – Taz Beauty.

A unique and ingenous cosmeceutical product from marine resources. The patented formulation promises enhanced collagen synthesis, stimulates renewal of skin cells, has lightening effect and provides protection from UV radiation. – RA8 Cosmeceutical.

Anti-aging bioactive from pineapple extract with nano emulsion – Bromex Bioactive.
Nano carrier oil from low quality kenaf seed for cosmetic application.
Anti-fungal from Nephellium lappaceum.
