Bio Natural Gas (BioNG) is produced from refinery waste or this year Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) and SIRIM expected to commercialize it, to replace diesel and petrol as fuel for motorized vehicles. BioNG has low carbon emission, low wastage, reduce pollution and greenhouse gases emitted into the air. This is because it is unlike the biodiesel which in liquid form, BioNG is in the form of a gas that has low carbon footprint emission.

In a more technical term, BioNG is a form of purified and versatile biogas with efficiency equals to that of petroleum. SIRIM firmly believes BioNG able to completely replace current conventional natural gas as a transportation fuel in the form of compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The idea took physical form in the year 2016 when the demonstration plant for BioNG was established in Merotai, Tawau with support from both the government itself and cooperation from Sime Darby Plantation. Currently, the plantation has the capacity to produce 6000 m3 of BioNG which equals to 6000 liter diesel per day, approximately. With such positive development, SIRIM now embarks on the journey of using BioNG to replace diesel and petroleum used as fuel source for vehicles. Major breakthroughs and developments have been made by SIRIM since the first they sought ways to obtain, store, refine and distribute all palm oil mills to be use as an alternative fuel eight years ago. Five years later, SIRIM expanded it's capabilities by demonstrating practicality of BioNG to the consumers. The demonstration was done at both on and off sites, focusing on the holistic value chain which involves raw material, production, processing, storage, and distribution.

The project site is located along Merotai-Kalabakan highway or also known as Pan-Borneo Highway that connects Tawau to Kuching. SIRIM installed filling stations along the highway for normal vehicles and plantation vehicles use. The impact showed from vehicles used BioNG as their alternative fuel source, saw an increase in power performance. Aside from that combustions produced by BioNG resulted in lowered mercury level, reduced soot, and sulfur. This means BioNG is cleaner and less hazardous than diesel and petroleum, an ideal alternative.

Among next objectives for BioNG is to formulate, and improve the use of BioNG, so that not only it will be commercialize and available within the plantation industry alone but to the public as well. To that end, SIRIM has formed a project committee comprised of amazing and brilliant minds from within the industry, the academic community, associations and researchers.
